“Autorun” is the infamous Windows feature that enables the automatic launching of applications, “splash screens”, interfaces and pop-up windows when various devices and media are connected to the computer. It’s most often viewed when USB flash sticks or other removable drives are plugged in, but also when optical discs are inserted, as long as these discs are configured to provide this feature (in which case, it is better known as “autoplay”). Though it usually comes in handy, the “autorun” is also a security hazard, as many viruses and malware use it to spread themselves with ease because of its automatic launching.
Antirun is a very simple little tool that can disable the “autorun” from removable drives and prevent autorun-based viruses and malware from infecting your system. It unobtrusively runs in the system tray area and detects when a removable device is inserted. Then it scans it for the autorun.inf file which triggers the launch of the notorious “autorun”. If this file is detected, Antirun will block its execution, thus protecting your system against any potential infection. Antirun is small, lightweight and easy-to-use. It can also be used to safely remove the connected portable devices, thanks to its “Eject” function. Furthermore, the full, registered version, known as Antirun Pro, also allows immunizing the connected devices against being infected with autorun-based viruses. more
